How to play

  1. 1Look at the baby, smile, and say "Jambo!" or "Habari?" once in a warm voice while you touch your own chest, then theirs.
  2. 2Clap two slow beats and invite the baby to copy if they clap or bang their hands.
  3. 3Sing or hum a short hello tune the family already uses (including Hello Song Swahili if known), then wave and say goodbye to the song until tomorrow.
  4. 4End with one more "Jambo" and a gentle nose-to-nose or cheek touch if the baby enjoys it.

Look for

  • Eyes on your face during the greeting
  • Copying a clap, wave, or vocal sound
  • Calm body after the song ends
  • Reaching toward your hands

Safety

  • Keep volume gentle; do not shout the greeting near sensitive ears.
  • Stop if the baby turns away repeatedly or cries through the whole song.
  • Stay within arm's reach during water play, pillow climbing, and drum play.
  • Use only baby-safe books and toys with no loose batteries, beads, or small parts.
  • Never leave a shallow water bin unattended; empty it when the activity ends.
  • Pot and pan drumming uses light taps only—no swinging toward faces or glass.
